About This Destination

A volcanic hot spring town with nine different types of natural thermal water and a dramatic Hell Valley.
Noboribetsu is Hokkaido's most famous hot spring resort, known for producing nine different types of thermal water, more than any other onsen town in Japan. The town's dramatic centerpiece is Jigokudani (Hell Valley), a volcanic crater with steaming vents, bubbling pools, and the sulfurous smell of volcanic activity. A well-maintained boardwalk allows visitors to explore the valley for free. The nearby Oyunuma pond reaches temperatures of 50 degrees Celsius, and its outflow creates a natural river hot foot bath that is free to enjoy. The town's many ryokan and hotels offer day-use bathing, with prices ranging from 700 to 2,250 yen. Noboribetsu is accessible by bus from JR Noboribetsu Station in about 15 minutes.
