Nintendo Museum
About This Destination
The low building near Ogura Station was Nintendo's Uji Ogura Plant, opened in 1969 to make playing cards and hanafuda and later used to repair game consoles. Those jobs moved to another plant in 2016, and the company turned the site into a museum that opened on 2 October 2024. The exhibits run from the hanafuda cards Nintendo began with to the Nintendo Switch, and a hands-on area rebuilds older play with current technology. Getting in is the hard part. Every ticket comes through an online lottery tied to a Nintendo Account, is paid by credit card only, and is issued in the visitor's own name, with photo ID checked at the door. Adults pay 3,300 yen, junior and senior high school students 2,200 yen, elementary school children 1,100 yen. A hanafuda-making workshop needs a separate booking made on the day and costs extra. Photography is allowed only in the hands-on area, and selfie sticks and tripods are banned. The museum has no parking and asks visitors not to arrive by car, taxi or bicycle; Kintetsu Ogura Station is five minutes away on foot. Byodo-in, in central Uji, is a short bus ride from the museum's other access point, JR Uji Station.
