About This Destination

A preserved samurai residential district with earthen walls, private gates, and narrow lanes. The Nomura-ke house offers a glimpse into samurai life with its elegant garden.
Nagamachi was the residential district for middle and upper-class samurai who served the Maeda lords during the Edo period. Today, the area retains its historic atmosphere with original earthen walls (dobei), samurai gates, and winding narrow lanes. The Nomura-ke Samurai House is the district's highlight, featuring a small but exquisite Japanese garden that has been ranked among the top gardens in the world by the Journal of Japanese Gardening. Visitors can explore the tatami rooms with displays of samurai artifacts, armor, and family heirlooms. The Shinise Kinenkan museum showcases traditional Kanazawa crafts and merchant culture. Free walking tours are available, and the district is particularly atmospheric in winter when snow covers the earthen walls.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Nagamachi Samurai District?

From Kanazawa Station East Exit, take the Kanazawa Loop Bus (right loop) to Korinbo or Nagamachi-Bukeyashiki-mae stop (about 12 minutes, 200 yen). The district is a 5-minute walk from either stop. From Kenroku-en or Higashi Chaya, you can also walk in around 20–25 minutes for a scenic route through the city center.

What's worth seeing inside Nagamachi?

The Nomura-ke Samurai House (550 yen) is the highlight — its small but exquisite garden has been ranked among the world's finest by the Journal of Japanese Gardening. The Shinise Kinenkan museum (100 yen) shows traditional Kanazawa merchant culture. The Kaga-Yuzen Kaikan offers silk-dyeing demonstrations, and walking the earthen-walled Nagamachi-yusui canals is free. Free volunteer English tours are sometimes available — ask at the visitor center.

When is the best time to visit Nagamachi?

Winter (mid-December to early March) is unforgettable when straw mats called komo-gake are wrapped around the earthen walls to protect them from snow — a uniquely Kanazawa scene. Spring and autumn are also lovely with garden colors at Nomura-ke. Mornings before 10 AM are quietest in the lanes. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the district plus the Nomura-ke garden.

What food should I try near Nagamachi?

Within the district there are small cafes serving wagashi sweets and matcha. A 5-minute walk away in Korinbo and Katamachi you'll find Kanazawa's main dining quarter with kaiseki restaurants, oden bars, jibu-ni specialty shops, and casual sushi counters. The Otemori arcade and Tatemachi shopping street nearby also have several lunch options.
