About This Destination

A 531 m forested hill on the south-west edge of Sapporo, reached by a ropeway and then the small Mo-risu Car cable car. The summit deck looks over the whole city grid; a round trip on both is 2,100 yen, and on clear evenings the queue for the ride up gets long.

Ride a streetcar to the Ropeway Iriguchi stop, hop on the free shuttle bus for two minutes, and you are at the base of the Mt. Moiwa Ropeway in about the time it takes to cross Sapporo's downtown. The glass-walled gondola climbs to a mid-station, where you change to the Mo-risu Car, a small cable car that does the last stretch to the 531 m summit. From the deck the street grid runs off to Ishikari Bay, with the TV Tower and the Toyohira River easy to pick out. Most people come after dark. A round trip on both cars is 2,100 yen for adults and 1,050 yen for children, cars leave every 15 minutes, and the last one up goes at 21:30 all year. On clear evenings, especially at weekends, the line at the base can stretch long enough that the operator sells a priority boarding ticket for the ride up between 17:00 and 21:00. The summit restaurant, THE JEWELS, takes window seats seriously, so book if you want one. Bring a layer even in August: the deck catches the wind.
