Miyako-jima has the sand people mean when they talk about Okinawan beaches, white and fine and shelving gently. Maehama runs seven kilometers. The island is connected to neighboring Irabu Island by the Irabu Bridge, one of Japan's longest toll-free bridges. Unlike much of Okinawa, Miyako-jima has no venomous habu snakes, making it good for carefree exploration. The coral reefs surrounding the island offer excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities.
