Michi-no-Eki Toju-no-Sato Adogawa
About This Destination
Toju-no-Sato Adogawa opened in June 2006 on Route 161, the main road up the west shore of Lake Biwa toward Makino and Fukui. It is roughly 50 minutes from Kyoto-Higashi IC and a walk of 10 to 15 minutes from JR Adogawa Station. The Takashima Michikusa Ichiba market sells morning vegetables and local products, and visitors often find funazushi, the strong fermented crucian carp of Lake Biwa.
Two things are specific to this corner of Takashima. Adogawa's fan-rib workshops have supplied the parts of folding fans for around 300 years, and the station sells finished fans and Takashima chijimi crepe cloth. Adberry, a boysenberry grown here, turns up in jams and sweets. Nakae Toju, the early Edo Confucian scholar the area is proud of, taught at Toju Shoin, about ten minutes' walk north.
Adogawa Kitchen opens at 9:00 and does breakfast, which is unusual for a roadside station, then rice and koji dishes, soba and udon. Adogawa Grill opens at 11:00. The station closes on the second Wednesday of most months, but the Lawson convenience store on site runs 24 hours if you arrive early or late.
