About This Destination
Lake Kasumigaura is Japan's second-largest lake, and this station sits right on its shore where Route 354 crosses on the Kasumigaura Ohashi bridge. The flat water and Mt. Tsukuba on the far side are the view. Cyclists know the spot too: the Tsukuba Kasumigaura Rinrin Road runs past along the shore.
Inside, the Koikoi tourist product hall leans on the lake. Alongside local vegetables you will find carp and wakasagi smelt in tsukudani, simmered sweet in soy sauce, and sweet-simmered carp, the kind of thing people here take home as a gift. The food corner has been known for Namegata burgers, local burgers built around fish from the lake; what is on the menu changes, so ask at the counter.
Next door, Kasumigaura Fureai Land has the 60 m Rainbow Tower, whose observation room looks down on the bridge and across the lake, plus a water play area for children in summer. Check the tower's hours and fees separately. From Chiyoda-Ishioka IC on the Joban Expressway, allow about 22 km via Routes 6, 355 and 354.
