Michi-no-Eki Kokindenju-no-Sato Yamato
About This Destination
Kokindenju-no-Sato Yamato takes its name from the old Yamato area of Gujo, where a medieval lord of the Tono clan handed down the secret teachings on the Kokinshu poetry anthology. The poetry is mostly left to the separate Field Museum down the valley. The roadside station is about food: shops, a bakery and places to eat arranged around an open courtyard, a short drive from Gifu-Yamato IC on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway.
Look for the Kototoi ice cream and yogurt, made with raw milk from the Hirugano highlands farther up the road. A foot bath in the courtyard is a good place to sit with it. If you have more time, Yamato Onsen Yasuragi-kan shares the site and has an outdoor bath with a slide that children love. The baths open later than the shops and close at night, so they suit the end of a day's driving.
It is a popular stop with families on the way to Hirugano, Shirotori and Shirakawa-go, so the car park fills on holiday weekends. Several sources list Tuesday closures and different hours for each shop and the baths; check the current schedule before you plan a meal here.
