About This Destination

A small station in the hills of Seki, in a district written with the same characters as the Heisei era. Locals read it Henari. Come for log-grown shiitake, a shiitake katsudon and a foot bath.

The district in the former town of Mugi was written 平成 long before 1989, when the same characters became the name of a new imperial era. The local reading is Henari, but the station uses Heisei. That coincidence made the place a curiosity, and visitors came again in 2019 when the era ended. A small bridge and grove behind the building were added around then.

The real draw is shiitake. The Mugi area grows mushrooms on oak logs, and the station has its own shiitake garden next door where you can pick and grill them by reservation. Fresh log-grown shiitake go on sale in the morning and often sell out before noon on weekends. Kissa Gobushi serves a shiitake katsudon, with thick caps fried like a cutlet.

It sits on Prefectural Road 58, a back route toward Gero, about ten minutes north of Tomika-Seki IC on the Tokai-Kanjo Expressway. The station is small, so do not expect a full afternoon of shopping. Hours are roughly 9:00 to 17:00, and it closes over the New Year.
