Michi-no-Eki Kitaura Kaido Hohoku
About This Destination
Michi-no-Eki Kitaura Kaido Hohoku stands on Route 191, the coast road along the Sea of Japan side of Yamaguchi. From the viewing terrace you look straight down on Waku fishing port, with Tsunoshima and its long bridge out on the horizon. Most people stop here on the way to or from the island.
The restaurant, Wakuwaku-tei, is the main draw. Its seafood bowl changes with what came in that day, and the local Kottoi squid (the place name 特牛 reads Kottoi) is served as a rice bowl and, in season, sliced live. The Hohoku Yume Ichiba shop sells local produce and souvenirs.
Next to the building is Waku Kofun No. 1, an ancient burial mound kept on the station grounds. Its stone chamber is fenced off, but the top of the mound is another good spot for the sea view. The restaurant closes earlier in winter, so do not count on a late lunch then.
