About This Destination

Port Tower Selion, 143 metres of glass at Tsuchizaki harbour, doubles as a roadside station. Ride up to the free deck at 100 metres, then shop for kiritanpo and iburigakko on the ground floor before heading for the Oga Peninsula.

Most roadside stations are a car park and a farm shop. This one is a 143-metre glass tower on the Akita waterfront. Port Tower Selion opened in 1994 and became Michi-no-Eki Akita Port in July 2010, together with the Selion Plaza event hall and the covered garden next to it.

Take the lift to the observation deck at 100 metres. It is free, and with nothing tall nearby you get a full circle: the harbour and the Sea of Japan on one side, the city and the hills behind on the other. Back on the ground floor, the shop is a one-stop place for Akita staples such as kiritanpo, iburigakko smoked pickles, Inaniwa udon and local sake.

The tower is near the junction of Route 7 and Prefectural Road 56 at Tsuchizaki, about 20 minutes by car from Akita Station, which makes it an easy first or last stop on a drive to Oga. Parking is free. Without a car, the Selion-bound bus from Akita Station takes about 25 minutes. Shop and observation deck hours differ and change with the season.
