About This Destination
A highland resort town in eastern Nagano known for cool summers, outlet shopping, and nearby waterfalls.
Karuizawa is a resort town in eastern Nagano Prefecture at the foot of Mount Asama, long used as a summer retreat because of its cool highland climate. The Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza, an outlet mall with around 220 shops set around a pond and lawns, sits directly beside Karuizawa Station. Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza is the town's old main street, lined with cafes, souvenir shops, and restaurants. The Shiraito Falls of Karuizawa, a curved 3-metre-high, roughly 70-metre-wide curtain of spring-fed water, lie about a 25-minute bus ride from the station. The town is reached from Tokyo in about 65 to 80 minutes on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Cycling and walking are common ways to move between the town's woodland areas and attractions.
