About This Destination

A mountainous coastal peninsula southwest of Tokyo, famous for hot spring resorts, beautiful beaches, dramatic coastlines, and wasabi farms.
The Izu Peninsula extends 60 kilometers south from Shizuoka Prefecture into the Pacific Ocean, offering an extraordinary diversity of attractions within easy reach of Tokyo. The peninsula is blessed with abundant hot springs, from the large resort towns of Atami and Ito on the east coast to the secluded onsen villages of the mountainous interior. The eastern Izu coastline features sandy beaches popular for swimming and surfing, while the western coast along Suruga Bay offers dramatic cliff scenery and quieter fishing villages. Inland, visitors can tour wasabi farms in Amagi where the pungent root grows in pristine mountain streams, or hike through the dense forests of the Amagi mountain range. The Jogasaki Coast on the eastern shore provides spectacular walking trails along volcanic cliffs above the ocean. The peninsula's mild climate, diverse scenery, and proximity to Tokyo make it one of Japan's most popular resort destinations.
