About This Destination

Hoshi Onsen is a single wooden inn, Chojukan, at the foot of the Mikuni Pass. Its big bath, Hoshi-no-yu, dates from 1895, and the roughly 40°C water comes straight up from the rock under the stones you sit on. Reaching it without a car means a train, a bus and a town bus that runs four times a day.

Hoshi Onsen is a single inn, Chojukan, with no village around it. It sits by the Hoshi River below the Mikuni Pass on the old road from Gunma into Niigata. The main building went up in 1875, and the bathhouse, Hoshi-no-yu, in 1895. Both, along with the annex, were registered as national tangible cultural properties in 2006. Hoshi-no-yu is the reason people make the trip. It is a tall wooden hall with a cedar-bark roof, and the tubs are wooden frames laid over river stones. The spring comes up from the bedrock right under those stones at around 40°C, and the inn says it does almost no heating, adding of water or recirculation. You will see small bubbles rise around your feet. It is mixed bathing. A second bath, Choju-no-yu, also has water rising from below; ask the inn which baths are open to men and women when you visit. Yosano Akiko and Kawabata Yasunari both stayed here. Day bathing is possible, but the window is short and the inn closes it on Wednesdays. The buses make a day trip work only on one schedule, so read the transport notes before you go. Sarugakyo, the onsen village by Lake Akaya where you change buses, has the site of the old Sarugakyo checkpoint on the Mikuni road and is a good place to fill the wait.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Hoshi Onsen as a day trip by public transport?

Yes, but on one schedule. On the town's timetable revised 2 December 2024, take the 8:58 bus from Jomo-Kogen to Sarugakyo, the 11:06 town bus to Hoshi (arriving 11:20), bathe, and leave on the 14:23 town bus. The town bus runs only four times a day each way, so check the current timetable first.

What are the day-bathing hours and fee?

Reception is 11:00 to 13:30 and you must be out by 14:00. Adults pay 1,500 yen, children from age 3 through elementary school pay 500 yen. Day bathing is not available on Wednesdays (cleaning day) or on other irregular closing days, so phone the inn (0278-66-0005) before you go.

Is Hoshi-no-yu mixed bathing?

Yes. For overnight guests it is women-only from 20:00 to 22:00. Bathing wraps are not allowed, and neither is wrapping a towel around yourself. The inn's own pages give different gender times for the second bath, Choju-no-yu, so ask at reception which bath you can use.
