About This Destination
One of Japan's twelve original castles, surrounded by 2,600 cherry trees that create a legendary spring display.
Hirosaki Castle is one of only twelve castles in Japan with an original keep, built in 1611 by the Tsugaru clan. The castle grounds are home to approximately 2,600 cherry trees, making the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival one of the most spectacular hanami events in all of Japan, typically held from late April to early May. Fallen petals create pink carpets on the ground and a pink river on the outer moat, a phenomenon unique to Hirosaki. The castle keep has been temporarily moved from its stone base for renovation work, expected to be completed by 2028. The park offers free admission during winter months from late November through March. The castle is accessible by bus from JR Hirosaki Station in about 15 minutes.
