About This Destination
A fairytale-like hot spring town with Taisho-era wooden ryokan lining a river gorge, magical when snow-covered.
Ginzan Onsen is a remote hot spring town tucked into the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture, famous for its row of Taisho-era (1912-1926) wooden ryokan that line both sides of the narrow Ginzan River gorge. The town's name means Silver Mine Hot Spring, referencing a former silver mine that was active until the early 17th century. Gas street lamps illuminate the wooden buildings at night, creating an atmosphere that feels frozen in time. The scene is particularly magical in winter when deep snow covers the rooftops. The town is small and entirely pedestrian, with public bathhouses available for around 500 yen. Access is from JR Oishida Station on the Yamagata Shinkansen, followed by a 40-minute bus ride. Many ryokan offer shuttle service from the station.
