About This Destination
One of two head temples of Soto Zen Buddhism, Eiheiji is an active monastery where over 100 monks train daily.
Eiheiji was founded in 1244 by Zen master Dogen and remains one of the most important Zen monasteries in Japan, serving as the head temple of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism. The sprawling complex of over 70 buildings is nestled in a tranquil cedar forest, connected by covered corridors that create a meditative atmosphere. Visitors can observe monks going about their daily training and explore the beautifully maintained halls, including the Sanmon gate, Butsuden (Buddha Hall), and the ornate ceiling paintings of the Sanshokaku. Overnight Zen meditation retreats are available for those seeking a deeper experience. The temple is open 8:30 to 16:30, and visitors should dress modestly and maintain quiet.
