About This Destination

A year-round venue and museum dedicated to the Awa Odori, Japan's largest traditional dance festival, featuring live performances daily and interactive dance sessions.
The Awa Odori Kaikan lets you see Tokushima's 400-year-old Awa Odori dance year-round. The actual festival runs four days in August, but this five-story building hosts daily performances by the resident Awa no Kaze troupe on the second floor. After the show, they invite the audience onstage to learn the steps and dance. Third floor has a museum covering the festival's history, instruments, and costumes. Fifth floor is the base station for the Bizan Ropeway up to Mount Bizan. Ten minutes on foot from JR Tokushima Station.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Awa Odori Kaikan?

From JR Tokushima Station, walk 10 minutes south through Higashi-Shinmachi shopping arcade — the Kaikan is at the foot of Mount Bizan. By the city circular bus, take the 'Tokushima Castle Loop' to Awa Odori Kaikan-mae stop (6 min, ¥210). Free parking at nearby Tokushima City Parking. From Tokushima Awaodori Airport: 30 minutes by airport limousine bus (¥600) to Tokushima Station, then walk.

What's included in the daily performances?

The resident Awa no Kaze troupe performs four 40-minute shows daily on the 2nd floor: 11:00, 14:00, 15:00, and 16:00 (8 daily 'Otokoodori' male-style shows in summer). Each show ends with audience members invited onstage to learn the simple female-style 'Onnaodori' steps and dance. Adult ticket ¥1,000 (combined with museum and ropeway up to Mount Bizan ¥2,540). Bring a smartphone for photos — flash photography is allowed during the dance-along.

When is the actual Awa Odori festival?

August 12–15 every year in central Tokushima — Japan's largest dance festival with about 1.2 million spectators and 100,000 dancers. The streets of Tokushima fill with troupes (ren) chanting 'Yatto sa, yatto yatto'. Reserved seats (¥1,500–3,500) sell out by April; standing 'free zones' are first-come. Outside festival days, the Kaikan is the next-best year-round substitute. Hotels book a year in advance for festival dates.

Is the museum and ropeway combo worth it?

Yes — the combo (¥2,540) saves about 25% over individual tickets. The 3F Awa Odori Museum (¥300) covers the festival's 400-year history with English signage and old festival films. The 5F Bizan Ropeway (¥1,030 round-trip) takes you to Mount Bizan in 6 minutes, with city panoramas and night views. The Kaikan + ropeway combo gives you 90 minutes of culture plus 45 minutes on the mountain — a perfect half-day in Tokushima.
