About This Destination

One of Japan's three most scenic views — a pine-covered sandbar spanning Miyazu Bay on the Sea of Japan coast.
Amanohashidate, meaning Bridge to Heaven, is a 3.6-kilometer pine-covered sandbar stretching across Miyazu Bay and has been celebrated as one of Japan's three most scenic views for centuries. The traditional way to enjoy the view is to look at it upside down between your legs from the hilltop viewpoints, making the sandbar appear as a bridge ascending to heaven. Visitors can walk, cycle, or take a sightseeing boat across the sandbar, which is lined with approximately 5,000 Japanese black pine trees. The surrounding area includes Chionji Temple, one of three temples dedicated to Monju, the bodhisattva of wisdom.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Amanohashidate from Kyoto City?

From Kyoto Station, take the JR limited express 'Hashidate' direct to Amanohashidate Station (about 2 hours, 4,820 yen). The Tango Tetsudo Mihoroshi train runs along the same line for slower scenic travel. By car, the journey via the Maizuru-Wakasa Expressway takes about 2 hours from Kyoto. The view sandbar is a 5-minute walk from Amanohashidate Station to the Chionji Temple side.

Where can I get the famous 'matanozoki' upside-down view?

Two viewpoints face each other across the bay: Kasamatsu Park on the north (reached by Tango Kairiku Kotsu Bus + chairlift or cable car, 850 yen round trip) and Amanohashidate View Land on the south (cable car or chairlift, 850 yen). Both have 'matanozoki' viewing platforms where you bend over and look between your legs to see the sandbar appear as a bridge to heaven. North side has the original viewpoint; south is closer to the train station.

What's the best way to cross the sandbar?

By bicycle is the most popular — rentals near both ends cost around 400 yen for 2 hours and the flat 3.6 km ride takes about 30 minutes round trip. Walking takes 50 minutes one way. Sightseeing boats (530 yen one way) cross between the Chionji and Ichinomiya sides in about 12 minutes. Many visitors combine both: cycle one direction and take the boat back. The pine-shaded path is wonderful in summer.

When is the best time to visit Amanohashidate?

Spring (April for cherry blossoms) and autumn (mid-November maple foliage on the surrounding hills) are the standout seasons. Summer brings excellent swimming at the Sea of Japan beaches just beyond the sandbar. Winter is unpredictable but gives crisp air and dramatic snow views from the upper viewpoints. Evening illumination of the sandbar runs on selected dates in summer. Plan an overnight stay to catch sunrise — there are ryokan onsen in nearby Yuhigaura.
