Shomyo Falls, in the town of Tateyama, drops a total of 350 metres in four tiers, making it the tallest waterfall in Japan. It is fed by snowmelt from the Tateyama mountains and is designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. After the spring thaw, a second seasonal fall called Hannoki Falls appears alongside it, and the combined flow is at its most powerful. The falls are reached from a car park at the end of the prefectural road, followed by a walk of about 1.3 kilometres, roughly 30 minutes, along the gorge. The access road is closed in winter. There is no admission charge.
