出島

Dejima is a fan-shaped artificial island in Nagasaki that was completed in 1636, first for Portuguese residents and from 1641 as the base of the Dutch trading post. During Japan's roughly 220-year period of national seclusion, it was the country's only point of regular trade and contact with the West. Land reclamation later absorbed the island into the surrounding city, but Nagasaki has been rebuilding its Edo-period warehouses, residences and offices since the 1990s. Visitors can walk through the reconstructed buildings, which display goods, furnishings and exhibits about the trade with the Netherlands. The site is a nationally designated historic site and includes a small cafe on the grounds.
