About This Destination

A beautiful Japanese garden on Daikonshima island in Lake Nakaumi, famous for its spectacular peony displays. The indoor peony garden allows year-round viewing. The illuminated night garden is magical.
Yuushien is a beautifully composed strolling garden on Daikonshima, a small volcanic island floating in Lake Nakaumi between Matsue and the coast. The island has been one of Japan's foremost peony (botan) growing areas for centuries, and the garden showcases that heritage on a grand scale: a central pond, pine-clad islets, waterfalls, and tea houses arranged in classic kaiyu-shiki (circuit) style, with tens of thousands of peony plants. The signature sight is the spring 'floating peonies,' when thousands of cut blooms are set adrift across the pond in a carpet of colour, but an indoor peony pavilion lets visitors see the flowers in peak condition all year round. Daikonshima is also a historic centre of Korean ginseng cultivation, and the garden's restaurants and shops feature both peony and ginseng products. Seasonal illuminations — autumn dahlias floating on the water, winter light displays — make evening visits especially magical, and the whole garden takes a relaxed one to two hours to explore.
