About This Destination

A hilltop viewpoint offering the most spectacular views of the Great Seto Bridge connecting Honshu and Shikoku. The sunset over the Seto Inland Sea with the bridge silhouette is one of Japan's most celebrated evening scenes.
From this hilltop viewpoint, the Great Seto Bridge unfolds in all its engineering glory, stretching 13 kilometers across multiple islands to connect Honshu and Shikoku across the Inland Sea. The observation platforms offer the finest vantage point to appreciate the bridge's graceful arc and the scattered islands dotting the glittering waters below. Sunset transforms the scene into pure gold, while the surrounding park provides pleasant walking trails through pine forests with multiple overlooks along the ridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Washuzan Hill?

From JR Okayama Station, take the JR Seto-Ohashi Line to Kojima Station — about 50 minutes (¥590). From Kojima, the Shimotsui-bound 'Tokai Bus' runs to Washuzan Daini (Second) Observatory in about 25 minutes (¥220), with limited service. By car, it's 30 minutes from Kojima IC; free parking at the observation lots. Cyclists can ride the 12-km Shimotsui Coastal Path along the bridge approach, hugging the cliffs above the Seto Inland Sea with the Great Seto Bridge in view most of the way.

When is the best time to visit Washuzan?

Sunset, year-round — Washuzan is on Japan's '100 Best Sunset Spots' list, and the 13-km Great Seto Bridge cuts a long dark line across the orange western sky. Aim to arrive 45 minutes before sunset (check local times). Clear winter days (December–February) offer the sharpest visibility across to Shikoku. Cherry blossoms add pink in early April. Avoid foggy mornings (common March–May) when the bridge can disappear entirely. Sunday evenings have the best bridge-illumination viewing.

Are there multiple viewpoints on Washuzan?

Yes — three main spots, all free. Washuzan First Observatory (Daiichi Tenboudai) is at the summit (133m) with the broadest panorama, reached by a 10-minute walk from the parking lot. The Second Observatory (Daini Tenboudai) is closer to the road and bus stop with great accessibility. Higashi-no-Mae offers a quiet, lower-elevation framing. The Visitor Centre near the Second Observatory has a small free exhibition on the bridge's construction.

Can I combine Washuzan with Kojima or the art islands?

Yes — Kojima Station is the gateway to Washuzan and also Japan's denim capital. The Kojima Jeans Street (10 minutes by bus from the station) has dozens of denim shops. From Kojima you can also catch ferries to Naoshima (50 min via Uno). A perfect day combines: morning Kojima Jeans Street, lunch at Kojima Port, afternoon at Washuzan, sunset photography from First Observatory, then dinner back in Kurashiki or Okayama.
