About This Destination

A long, forested island in the strait between Kyushu and Korea, with a 7th-century border fort, a shrine whose torii stand in the sea and the only wild leopard cats in Japan. It is about 82 km from north to south, so you need a car and at least two days.

Tsushima is about 82 km from north to south, and that length decides how a trip goes. From Izuhara, the port town in the south, to the Korea Observatory at the northern tip takes roughly two hours by car, and buses are few, so rent a car at the airport or the port. Korea is 49.5 km away across the strait. From the observatory at Waniura you can see Busan on clear days, though the tourism association puts the odds at about one day in six, better in autumn and winter. In the middle of the island, Aso Bay breaks into a maze of drowned inlets. Climb the 145 steps from the car park to the Eboshidake lookout, 176 m up, for the view over it, then drive down to Watatsumi Shrine, where torii stand in the water and the spring high tides reach toward the main hall. Kaneda Castle on Mount Joyama (276 m) is a stone-walled fort built in 667, four years after Japan's defeat at the Battle of Hakusukinoe, and a national Special Historic Site; the climb from the trailhead takes about 40 minutes. The Tsushima leopard cat, estimated at 70 to 100 animals, lives only here. You are unlikely to see one, but drive slowly at night.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Tsushima from Fukuoka?

Fly from Fukuoka Airport (about 35 minutes) or take a Kyushu Yusen boat from Hakata Port: the jetfoil to Izuhara takes about 2 hours 15 minutes via Iki, the car ferry about 4 hours 45 minutes. There is also an overnight ferry to Hitakatsu in the north.

Do I need a car on Tsushima?

Realistically, yes. The island is about 82 km long, buses are infrequent, and the drive from Izuhara to the Korea Observatory in the north alone takes about two hours. Rental cars are available at the airport and the ports.

Can I really see Korea from Tsushima?

On clear days, yes. Busan is about 49.5 km from the Korea Observatory at Waniura, but the tourism association says it is visible only about one day in six, more often in autumn and winter. At night you may see the city lights.

Where can I see a Tsushima leopard cat?

At the Ministry of the Environment's Tsushima Wildlife Conservation Center in Kamiagata, which is free and open 10:00 to 16:30 (last entry 16:00), closed Mondays, Tuesdays and over New Year. The live cat is not shown when its health does not allow it.
