About This Destination

Iconic castle with a distinctive red-tiled roof, Tsuruga Castle is the symbol of Aizu's samurai spirit and one of the few castles in Japan with such striking vermilion tiles.
Tsuruga Castle, also known as Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle, stands as a proud testament to the samurai heritage of the Aizu region. The castle's distinctive red-tiled roof was restored in 2011 to match its original Edo-period appearance, making it the only castle in Japan with red roof tiles. Inside, a museum spanning five floors chronicles the turbulent history of the Aizu clan, including their tragic last stand during the Boshin War. The surrounding Tsuruga Park is one of the top cherry blossom spots in Japan, with over 1,000 trees blooming in spring. Visitors can also enjoy the tea house Rinkaku and explore the walking paths around the castle moat.
