About This Destination

A ropeway in the Okuhida hot spring area of Takayama that carries passengers to a viewpoint over the Northern Japan Alps, using a double-decker cabin on its upper section.
The Shinhotaka Ropeway runs in the Okuhida hot spring area of Takayama, in the mountains of northern Gifu Prefecture. It is made up of two sections, and the second, upper section uses Japan's only two-storey (double-decker) cabins. The upper station stands at about 2,156 metres, where an observation deck looks out over the peaks of the Northern Japan Alps, including the Hotaka range and Yari-ga-take. Around the top station there are walking paths and, in season, views of forests, snow, and autumn colour. The area is used both by sightseers and by climbers heading into the mountains. It is reached by Nohi Bus to the Shinhotaka Onsen stop or by car via the Takayama interchange.
