About This Destination

Edo-period garden and villa of the Shimazu clan, using Sakurajima volcano and Kinko Bay as borrowed scenery.
Built 1658 by the 19th Shimazu lord as a villa and garden using Sakurajima volcano and Kinko Bay as borrowed scenery. Traditional Japanese landscaping mixes with elements reflecting the Shimazu clan's international ties—Chinese-style sections and a cat shrine for cats used in the Korean campaigns. The adjacent Shoko Shuseikan Museum covers the Shimazu's pioneering industrialization, including Japan's first Western-style factory complex (UNESCO World Heritage). Cherry blossoms in spring, chrysanthemums in autumn.
