About This Destination

A pedestrian suspension bridge with a 375-meter main span, hung 100 meters above the lake behind Ryujin Dam in northern Ibaraki. People bungee jump from the middle of it, and around Golden Week about 1,000 carp streamers fly over the gorge. There is no train: the bus from Hitachi-Ota Station runs three times on weekdays and five times on weekends and holidays, and the bus must be booked in advance.

The Ryujin Suspension Bridge spans the lake behind Ryujin Dam, 100 meters above the water. The main span is 375 meters and the whole structure 446 meters, which the operator calls one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in Japan. It opened in 1994 and was last repainted, in blue, in March 2025. It is a steel deck with high side panels painted with dragons, so it does not feel like a rope bridge. The height comes through at three acrylic windows in the deck, where you look straight down at the lake. Cars cannot cross. Crossing costs 320 yen for adults and 210 yen for elementary and junior high school students. The bridge is open 8:30 to 17:00 (last entry 16:40), until 20:00 on Saturdays for the light-up (last entry 19:30), and crossing can be restricted in strong wind or lightning. From the middle, Bungy Japan runs a 100-meter bungee jump for 19,000 yen, currently cash only (cards are not accepted on site at present), for people aged 15 and over weighing 40 to 105 kg. Around Golden Week the Ryujinkyo Koinobori Festival strings about 1,000 carp streamers over the gorge (25 April to 10 May in 2026). Expect full parking lots then.

No. It is a footbridge only. Park in one of the three free lots at the bridge and pay the crossing fee (320 yen for adults, 210 yen for elementary and junior high school students). It is open 8:30 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:40, and until 20:00 on Saturdays, with last entry at 19:30.

What are the rules for the Ryujin bungee jump?

Bungy Japan runs the 100-meter jump from the middle of the bridge. You must be 15 or older and weigh 40 to 105 kg; under-18s need a parent or guardian with them or a signed consent form. The first jump is 19,000 yen and a second on the same day is 8,000 yen, currently cash only (cards are not accepted on site at present). It runs year-round, 9:00 to 17:30 (last entry 16:30, or 16:00 in winter), but closing days vary, so book ahead on the Bungy Japan website or by phone.

Every year around Golden Week. In 2026 it ran from 25 April to 10 May, its 35th year, with about 1,000 carp streamers over the dam and around the bridge. On 5 May, Children's Day, elementary and junior high school students cross free.
