How do I get to Rurikoji Temple?
From Shin-Yamaguchi Station on the San'yo Shinkansen, take the JR Yamaguchi Line to JR Yamaguchi Station, about 30 minutes away. From there a bus to the temple takes about 15 minutes.
What is Rurikoji Temple famous for?
It is home to a five-story pagoda from 1442, counted with the pagodas of Horyu-ji and Daigo-ji among Japan's three finest. It has a Japanese cypress-bark roof and is reflected in the pond of Kozan Park. The temple is part of the Ouchi clan legacy that earned Yamaguchi the name "Kyoto of the West".
What are the fees, and what should I check before visiting?
The pagoda exterior can be viewed anytime for free, though the interior is closed, and a small museum costs 200 yen. Note that the pagoda is under roof renovation until around 2026, so check the current status before visiting. The pond reflection is best on still, clear days.
