About This Destination

A remote archipelago designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark, featuring dramatic sea cliffs, unique ecosystems, and ancient Shinto traditions preserved through centuries of isolation.
The Oki Islands are a volcanic archipelago of four inhabited islands and approximately 180 smaller islets floating in the Sea of Japan about 50km off the Shimane coast. Designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2013, the islands showcase 250 million years of geological history through dramatic landscapes including the towering Matengai sea cliff (257m), one of Japan's highest. The islands served as a place of exile for Emperor Go-Daigo in the 14th century and retain unique cultural traditions including the ancient Oki style of sumo wrestling and bull sumo (ushi-tsunaki). The remote location has preserved rare flora and fauna, including the Oki salamander found nowhere else. Access is by ferry from Sakaiminato (2.5 hours) or Shichirui Port, or by small aircraft. Island-hopping between Dozen (three islands) and Dogo (main island) reveals distinct characters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to the Oki Islands?

Ferries depart from Sakaiminato Port (2.5 hours to Dogo) or Shichirui Port. High-speed ferries are faster but pricier. Small aircraft fly from Izumo Airport to Oki Airport on Dogo Island. Book ferries and accommodation in advance during summer.

How many days should I spend on the Oki Islands?

Minimum 2-3 days to see Dogo (main island) highlights. Add 1-2 days for island-hopping to Dozen (three smaller islands). Each island has distinct character. The remote location means rushing defeats the purpose of visiting.

What are the must-see spots on the Oki Islands?

On Dogo: Matengai cliff (257m sea cliff), Dangyo Shrine with ancient cedar trees, and the Oki Folk Museum. On Dozen: Kuniga Coast with its dramatic rock formations. The islands are a UNESCO Global Geopark with unique geology.

What is transportation like on the islands?

Rental cars or scooters are essential on Dogo as attractions are spread out and bus service is limited. Reserve in advance, especially during summer. On the smaller Dozen islands, bicycles work for shorter distances.
