About This Destination
A charming recreated Edo-to-Meiji period street adjacent to Ise Grand Shrine, packed with traditional shops, restaurants, and street food celebrating Ise's culinary heritage.
Okage Yokocho is an enchanting recreated historical street that captures the atmosphere of the Edo and Meiji periods when millions of pilgrims traveled to visit Ise Grand Shrine. Located along the Oharai-machi approach to the shrine's inner sanctuary (Naiku), the district features over 50 shops and restaurants housed in faithfully reconstructed traditional buildings. The area is a food lover's paradise, famous for Ise udon (thick soft noodles in dark sauce), akafuku mochi (red bean rice cakes that have been sold here since 1707), and tekone-zushi (marinated bonito sushi). Street food vendors offer freshly grilled Matsusaka beef skewers, dango, and local craft beers. Plan to visit after your shrine worship, allowing at least an hour to eat and browse the specialty shops selling Ise crafts, local sake, and traditional sweets.
