About This Destination

A surf island about 160 km south of Tokyo, where Habushiura's 6.5 km of white sand faces the open Pacific. Moyai statues carved from the local koga stone stand around the island, and the open-air pools at Yunohama are free and open 24 hours, swimsuit required.

Surfers know Niijima for one beach. Habushiura runs 6.5 km down the east coast, white sand facing the open Pacific, and its waves draw surfers from around Japan and abroad; shops rent boards and teach beginners. For an easy swim, the north end of Mamashita beach on the west side is calm and shallow, and Kurone beach is five minutes' walk from the port. The island's own rock is koga stone, a soft, light volcanic stone that Tokai Kisen says is mined outside Niijima only on Lipari in Italy. It went into houses and walls from the Meiji era to the Showa era, and into the Moyai statues you pass all over the island; moyai is island dialect for helping each other, and the Moyai outside Shibuya Station was a gift from Niijima. Yunohama open-air onsen, five minutes' walk from the port, has six pools of different temperatures set in a mock Greek temple, looking across to Shikinejima and Kozushima. It is free and open 24 hours, and you must wear a swimsuit, not a towel. Bring cash too: there is no 24-hour ATM on the island.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Niijima?

By Tokai Kisen's jet foil from Takeshiba (from 2 hours 20 minutes), its overnight ship (from about 8 hours 30 minutes), or Shin-Chuo Koku's small plane from Chofu Airport (about 35 to 40 minutes). There is also a car ferry from Shimoda, not on Wednesdays.

Is the Yunohama onsen really free?

Yes. It is free, open 24 hours and open all year, five minutes' walk from the port. Swimsuits are required and towels or bath wraps are not allowed; there are no rentals, but island shops sell swimsuits.

Do I need a car on Niijima?

The main village, beaches and onsen are within cycling distance, and bikes rent for about 1,500 yen a day. For the north around Wakago you need a car or scooter, since bicycles and pedestrians are banned from the Heisei Shinshima Tunnel.

Can I visit Shikinejima from Niijima?

Yes. The village's Nishiki ferry runs three times a day and needs no reservation. Shikinejima is known for its sea-rock hot springs such as Jinata Onsen.
