Mount Iwate
About This Destination
Iwate-san is the mountain Morioka looks at: a 2,038-meter volcano that rises northwest of the city and keeps snow on its upper slopes well into spring. It is not a casual climb. The standard route, the Yanagisawa course, starts at the Umagaeshi trailhead in Takizawa at 633 meters and runs 7.2 km to the top, about 4 hours 40 minutes one way by the Environment Ministry's estimate. Around the 2.5th station it splits: the new path climbs through scrub, the old path over rock with better views. At the 8th station there is a hut with a caretaker in summer and the Onari Shimizu spring, which is shut off in winter and can run dry, so carry enough water. Many people stay overnight at the hut instead of doing the round trip in one day. The volcano is watched closely. In October 2024 the Japan Meteorological Agency raised the alert to level 2 after swelling near Ojigokudani on the western side, and the trails from the west, including the Amihari route from Shizukuishi, were closed. The eastern trailheads, Umagaeshi among them, reopened on July 1, 2026, and the alert went back to level 1 that August, but parts of the west may still be restricted. Check Iwate Prefecture or the town halls before choosing a route.

Can I climb Mount Iwate now?
The routes from the four eastern trailheads (Umagaeshi, Yakehashiri, Jobo and Omisaka) reopened on July 1, 2026, and the alert level was lowered to 1 in August 2026. The western trailheads, Nanataki, Matsukawa and Amihari, were kept closed at that point, so check Iwate Prefecture and the Japan Meteorological Agency for the current status.
How long does the Yanagisawa course take?
About 4 hours 40 minutes one way for the 7.2 km from Umagaeshi to the summit, according to the Environment Ministry. The round trip is a full day, and many hikers break it with a night at the 8th station hut.
Is there water on the trail?
There is the Onari Shimizu spring at the 8th station, but it is shut off in winter to stop it freezing and can run dry, so carry enough water for the whole climb.
How do I get to the Umagaeshi trailhead?
By car it is about 15 minutes from the Takizawa IC, or about 20 minutes from Takizawa Station on the IGR Iwate Ginga Railway, and there is parking at the trailhead. Without a car, a taxi from Takizawa Station is the practical option.
