About This Destination

Historic 500,000-square-meter garden dating to 1845, famous for seasonal beauty and the immersive teamLab light art installations.
Mifuneyama Rakuen is a vast 500,000-square-meter garden at the foot of Mount Mifune, created in 1845 by the 28th lord of the Takeo domain. The garden is spectacular across all seasons with 200,000 azaleas and 5,000 cherry trees in spring, lush greenery in summer, vivid autumn foliage, and serene winter landscapes. Since 2015, the digital art collective teamLab has transformed the garden seasonally with immersive nighttime light installations, making it one of Japan's most innovative art experiences. The massive 3,000-year-old sacred camphor tree at the garden's heart is a spiritual highlight. The nearby Takeo Onsen offers a perfect pairing of art, nature, and hot springs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Mifuneyama Rakuen?

From Hakata, take the JR Limited Express 'Midori' or 'Huis Ten Bosch' to Takeo-Onsen Station (about 1 hour 10 minutes, 3,500 yen) — or the new Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen 'Kamome' from Takeo-Onsen Station. From the station, take a Saiei Bus (10 minutes, 200 yen) or taxi (about 5 minutes, 1,000 yen) to the garden entrance. Free parking is available if driving.

When are the teamLab installations on display?

teamLab installations run during three main seasons: spring (mid-April to early June, themed around azaleas and cherries), summer (mid-July to early November, lush forest), and autumn-winter (special winter illuminations into early January). Each season offers different installations. Day-only garden tickets are 600 yen; teamLab night tickets are 1,800–2,200 yen depending on season. Book teamLab tickets online via the official website — weekends and Golden Week sell out fast.

What's the best time to visit beyond teamLab?

Late April to early May for the 200,000 azaleas covering the entire mountainside in red, pink, and white — even more spectacular than cherry blossoms here. Mid-November for autumn maples around the gardens. The 3,000-year-old sacred camphor tree and Hagakure-no-Sato hot spring shrine are year-round highlights. Allow 2–3 hours for the daytime garden walk; combine with Takeo Onsen and Mifuneyama for a half-day trip.

Is the garden accessible for wheelchairs and strollers?

Partially. The lower garden paths near the entrance are paved and accessible, but the upper garden requires climbing rocky steps and uneven ground — challenging with a wheelchair. The teamLab events are designed with darkness and uneven paths in mind, so they may be difficult; check the official site for accessible-route information. Strollers can manage the lower areas. Restrooms include accessible options.
