Michi-no-Eki Uchiko Fresh Park Karari
About This Destination
Karari opened in 1996 on the bank of the Oda River, close to Uchiko's preserved merchant district. The rule at its farm market is simple: everything comes from growers in Uchiko, and the records show who grew what. Expect citrus, including the town's jabara, alongside whatever vegetables are in season.
The workshops are the reason to stay longer. A smokehouse makes ham and sausage from Uchiko pork, the bakery uses local ingredients, and an ice cream and sherbet counter works with fruit and vegetables from the area. The restaurant serves lunch only, so plan around midday rather than an evening meal.
Weekend mornings get busy, with the shop crowded from about 10:00 and the car park filling up around lunchtime. Leave the car here and walk into town if you like. One warning for theater fans: the Uchiko-za kabuki theater closed in September 2024 for about four years of repairs.
