About This Destination

Right off the Susami-minami exit of the Kisei Expressway, this Route 42 station has a seafood restaurant facing the Pacific and a small town aquarium devoted to shrimp and crabs.

Michi-no-Eki Susami sits at the southern end of the Kisei Expressway, about 800 m from Susami-minami IC, so it is a natural first stop on the coast road toward Kushimoto. The restaurant Sokai looks over the sea and the small Esuzaki headland, and serves local fish bought that day alongside set meals and noodles.

Next door, the Susami Municipal Shrimp and Crab Aquarium occupies the gym of the former Esumi Junior High School. It is small and admission is charged, but the touch pool with giant spider crabs and horseshoe crabs keeps children busy. You can leave for lunch at the station and go back in.

The produce market sells local vegetables, saury sushi and inobuta, the boar and pig cross bred in Susami, as frozen meat and ham. The shop is open 9 am to 5 pm. JR Esumi Station is a short walk away.
