Michi-no-Eki Sonogi-no-Sho
About This Destination
Sonogi tea is the reason most people pull in. Higashisonogi's tea, a rounded green tea called tamaryokucha, has picked up prizes at Japan's national tea fair year after year, and the shop stocks plenty of it. The soft-serve made with Sonogi tea is the easy way to try it on the spot.
Whale is the other local specialty. From the early Edo period, Sonogi's harbor was a landing and trading point for whale meat, and the shop still sells whale products. At lunch, the canteen's whale rice, cooked with the meat, is the dish to order. Local vegetables, fruit and boxed lunches fill out the rest of the shelves.
The station opened in 2002 beside Omura Bay, a minute from the Nagasaki Expressway. The canteen only serves at lunchtime, and the food stalls close mid-afternoon. JR Sonogi Station is about eight minutes away on foot.
