About This Destination

A small station on Route 56 where bonito is seared over burning straw in front of you. Order the tataki in the food court and go before 15:00 on a weekday.

Michi-no-Eki Nabura Tosa Saga is in Saga, a fishing town in Kuroshio known for catching bonito one at a time on poles and lines. The station sits on Route 56 at the eastern edge of the Hata area, and its whole reason to exist is katsuo.

The show is the straw fire. Staff sear bonito over burning straw at a booth in the food court, the flames jump up for a few seconds, and the fish arrives as tataki with a smoky crust and a cool, red center. A Tosa katsuo rice bowl is the other standard order. The market sells fish, produce and local salt.

It is not a big place, and the food court closes at 15:00 on weekdays, earlier than many visitors expect. The station also takes about one day off a month, announced on its site. Plan lunch here rather than dinner if you are driving the long coast road toward Shimanto.
