About This Destination

A fishing-port station on Route 388 in Kamae, at the southern tip of Oita next to the Miyazaki border. Since 2019 it has called itself Buri Laboratory and leans hard on farmed yellowtail, with a seafood restaurant and a market full of dried fish.

Kamae sits on the ria coast at the very bottom of Oita, and the station backs onto the fishing port. Saiki is one of Japan's big producers of farmed buri (yellowtail), so when a new operator took over in April 2019 it renamed the place Buri Laboratory and built the menu around the fish.

The Kirari Kamae-kan market sells what the boats and the fish market bring in, along with dried fish, fried fish-paste tempura and hiogi scallops, the brightly colored local shellfish. The Uminari-tei restaurant does seafood bowls and atsumeshi, the fishermen's dish of marinated fish over hot rice. Yellowtail dishes run from November to March.

Kamae IC on the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway is about five minutes away, so this works as a lunch stop on the coast road to Miyazaki. The restaurant has closed on Mondays since December 2024 because of staff shortages, while the market stays open. Check the operator's notices before planning a Monday lunch.
