About This Destination

A seaside station on Route 305 built around Echizen crab, the male snow crab Fukui is known for. A crab museum, an open-air bath facing the Sea of Japan and a local products shop share the site.

Route 305 hugs the Echizen coast for miles, and this station, opened in 2014, sits right on it at Kuriya. The building of the Echizen Crab Museum is hard to miss: it is shaped like a crab's open claws reaching toward the sea. Inside are tanks with live Echizen crab and a tunnel aquarium of local fish.

Next door, Active House Echizen has pools and the Isaribi open-air bath, where you soak looking straight out over the Sea of Japan. The products shop sells goods from around the town and the prefecture, and a counter hands out road and sightseeing information for the coast.

Crab is seasonal. The catch opens in early November and the coast gets busy on weekends after that, while in summer the museum tanks are the closest you will get. Several facilities close on Tuesdays, with a different pattern in winter, so check before a weekday trip. The museum and the baths charge separately.
