About This Destination

Nagano's second-largest lake after Suwa, near the Niigata border, where Naumann elephant fossils and tools left by people about 40,000 years ago have come out of the lakebed since the first dig in 1962. A museum on the shore shows the finds, and from May to October the lake fills with kayaks, SUP boards and a sightseeing boat.

In 1948 an innkeeper on Lake Nojiri picked up an odd lump from the lakebed, decided it was too strange to be a hot-water bottle, and showed it to the local school principal. It was the molar of a Naumann elephant, an Ice Age species. The first organised dig followed in March 1962, and by 2018 there had been 22 lakebed excavations, with volunteers of all ages from around Japan digging alongside the researchers. Bone knives and stone scrapers turned up in the same layers as the elephant bones, and the Nojiriko Naumann Elephant Museum on the shore reads the Tategahana site as a place where people hunted and butchered elephants about 40,000 years ago. Inside are life-size models of a Naumann elephant and a giant deer, plus a corner where you can handle fossils. The lake itself is 38.5 m deep and about 4.45 square kilometres, formed some 70,000 years ago when part of Mount Kurohime collapsed and dammed a valley. The busy west shore is flat and shallow; the east side is lava headlands and holiday villas. From May to October there are kayak, SUP and sailing lessons and a sightseeing boat of about 40 minutes that stops at Benten-jima for Uga Shrine. Without a car it is awkward: Kurohime Station is a 10-minute taxi ride away.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the museum's hours and admission?

The Nojiriko Naumann Elephant Museum is open 9:00 to 17:00 and closes over the New Year holidays and on the last day of each month (the next weekday if that falls on a weekend or holiday). Admission is 700 yen for adults and 350 yen for elementary and junior high school students. Wheelchair access, an elevator and an accessible toilet are available.

How do I get to Lake Nojiri without a car?

Take the Shinano Railway Kita-Shinano Line to Kurohime Station, then a taxi of about 10 minutes. Pick up a free taxi voucher at the station's tourist information office or ticket window first; it covers the 700-yen basic fare for a standard taxi.

Can I go out on the lake?

From May to October, yes. A sightseeing boat makes a trip of about 40 minutes with a stop at Benten-jima, where you can visit Uga Shrine, and local operators run kayak, canoe, SUP and sailing sessions. Bass fishing needs a fishing ticket.

Can visitors join the excavations?

The Nojiri digs have always taken volunteers of all ages, from schoolchildren to adults, from all over Japan; there were 22 lakebed digs between 1962 and 2018. They are not held every year, so ask the museum about the next one. The museum also runs stone tool-making workshops.
