About This Destination

A historic castle town on Saga's northern coast, renowned for its centuries-old Karatsu-yaki pottery tradition and the spectacular Karatsu Kunchi autumn festival. Karatsu Castle overlooks a beautiful pine-lined beach.
Karatsu is a charming seaside castle town that has been a center of ceramic arts since the 16th century, when Korean potters brought their techniques to the region. Karatsu-yaki pottery is prized for its rustic, natural aesthetic and remains actively produced in numerous kilns throughout the area. Karatsu Castle, perched on a hilltop overlooking the bay, was built in 1608 and offers excellent views of the Niji no Matsubara, a stunning five-kilometer stretch of white sand beach lined with a million black pine trees. The city's greatest cultural event is Karatsu Kunchi, held every November 2-4, when fourteen elaborately decorated hikiyama floats are paraded through the streets. The old town district retains much of its Edo-period character with traditional merchant houses and narrow lanes perfect for exploring on foot.
