About This Destination

A shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane on a hillside above Hofu, with a stone stairway and plum trees.

Hofu Tenmangu was founded in 904 to honour Sugawara no Michizane, worshipped as Tenjin, the deity of learning. The stone approach climbs from the town towards the shrine buildings, making the change in elevation part of the visit. Plum trees connect the grounds with the traditions of Tenjin worship. Combine the shrine with a walk through central Hofu rather than treating it as a distant mountain excursion.
