How do I get to Hitoyoshi?
From Kumamoto, the JR Kyushu 'Kuma River' Limited Express used to be the main route, but the line was severely damaged in the 2020 floods. Currently, take the JR Kyushu Bus from Kumamoto-Sakuramachi Bus Terminal to Hitoyoshi (about 1 hour 30 minutes, around 1,500 yen). The 'SL Hitoyoshi' steam train from Kumamoto runs on weekends (check schedule). By car, about 1.5 hours from Kumamoto via Route 3 and Route 219. Free street parking near Hitoyoshi Station.
What's worth seeing in Hitoyoshi?
Aoi Aso Shrine (a National Treasure with thatched-roof structures from 1610) is the cultural highlight. Hitoyoshi Castle Ruins offer city views and cherry blossoms in spring. The Kuma River winds through town with several rafting outfitters offering 1.5–2 hour trips through gorges. The town's 28 shochu distilleries — collectively a Geographical Indication — offer free or low-cost tastings; Sengetsu and Daiyame are well-known. The town is rebuilding after 2020 floods; check current open status.
What's special about Kuma shochu?
Kuma shochu is one of only four spirits in Japan with Geographical Indication (GI) protection (alongside Iki barley shochu, Ryukyu awamori, and Satsuma sweet-potato shochu). Made exclusively from rice using Kuma River water within Hitoyoshi-Kuma Basin, with a 700-year history. The 28 distilleries each have distinct styles — some use barrel aging like whisky. Try at distillery cafes like Sengetsu's, where flights of 4 different shochus cost around 700 yen. The mild rice base makes it easier for shochu newcomers than sweet-potato styles.
When is the best time to visit Hitoyoshi?
Spring (April for cherry blossoms at Hitoyoshi Castle Ruins) and autumn (mid-November foliage in the surrounding mountains) are most pleasant. Summer is hot but ideal for Kuma River rafting. Avoid the rainy season (June–early July) when river water is high and rafting may be cancelled. Winter is cold and quiet but distillery tours stay open. Allow 1–2 days; combining with Kirishima or southern Kyushu makes a 3–4 day Kyushu inland circuit.
