About This Destination

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hiraizumi was the political and cultural center of northern Japan in the 12th century. Chusonji temple's Konjikido (Golden Hall), covered entirely in gold leaf, is a masterpiece of Pure Land Buddhist art. The surrounding temple complexes of Motsuji and its Paradise Garden represent the idealized Buddhist Pure Land on earth.
In the twelfth century, Hiraizumi flourished as the capital of the Northern Fujiwara clan, rivaling Kyoto in cultural splendor before its fall in 1189. This UNESCO World Heritage Site preserves some of Japan's most extraordinary Pure Land Buddhist architecture. At Chusonji temple, the Konjikido (Golden Hall) gleams under its protective covering, every surface sheathed in gold leaf, sheltering the mummified remains of three generations of Fujiwara lords. Nearby Motsuji offers the finest surviving example of a Pure Land garden, designed to manifest the Buddhist paradise on earth. Though the temple buildings were lost to repeated fires, the garden's careful composition of ponds, islands, and shorelines remains as serene as when monks first walked these grounds nine centuries ago.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit the Golden Hall (Konjikido) at Chusonji?

Yes! The Golden Hall is Hiraizumi's main attraction. It's housed in a protective building to preserve it from the elements. Entry to Chusonji temple grounds is free, but accessing Konjikido requires a ticket (800 yen adults). The hall is entirely covered in gold leaf and contains the mummified remains of the Fujiwara lords.

How do I get to Hiraizumi from Sendai?

Take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Sendai to Ichinoseki (about 30 minutes), then transfer to the JR Tohoku Main Line to Hiraizumi (8 minutes). Total journey about 1 hour. From Tokyo, take the shinkansen directly to Ichinoseki (about 2 hours 10 minutes). A rental bicycle at Hiraizumi Station is useful for visiting the temples.

Should I visit both Chusonji and Motsuji?

Yes, both are worth visiting and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Chusonji has the famous Golden Hall, while Motsuji has Japan's finest Pure Land garden—the temple buildings burned down but the garden remains as designed 900 years ago. Plan 2-3 hours to see both comfortably.
