About This Destination

A small farming hamlet halfway up the Hatenashi Pass in Totsukawa, Nara, where the World Heritage Kohechi pilgrimage trail runs right past the houses. Locals call it the village in the sky for its view across the Hatenashi mountains. There is no train for a long way, and the usual approach is a steep climb on stone steps from Totsukawa Onsen.

Hatenashi is a handful of farmhouses on a slope above the Totsukawa Onsen hot spring area, in the far south of Nara Prefecture near the Wakayama border. It sits halfway up the Hatenashi Pass on the Kohechi, the Kumano Kodo route from Koyasan to Kumano Hongu Taisha, and the trail is literally the path in front of people's houses. Totsukawa village calls it the village in the sky because you can see across the Hatenashi mountains from here, and it was picked for the Nihon no Sato 100 list of Japanese rural landscapes. There is not much to do except look: fields, spring water, a stone path, ridges fading into the distance. Getting here is the work. From Totsukawa Onsen it is about 15 minutes on foot to the trailhead, then roughly 40 minutes of steep stone steps with almost no flat ground. Most people walk back down the same way. Hikers with a full day can continue over the 1,114 m pass to Yakio on the Kumano River; 33 Kannon statues line the way up. People live here, so keep your voice down, stay off fields and private land, do not fly drones, and do not come at night or early in the morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a bus that goes right up to Hatenashi?

Only on Mondays. Totsukawa's village-run Hatenashi line leaves Totsukawa Onsen twice a day and stops at Naka-Hatenashi and Sekai Isan Sekihi-mae. On any other day you walk up from Totsukawa Onsen. The timetable the village posts dates from 2018, so confirm with the village bus office (0746-64-0408).

How hard is the walk up from Totsukawa Onsen?

Short but steep. It is about 15 minutes on foot to the trailhead, then roughly 40 minutes of stone steps that start straight away and barely level out. Allow about an hour each way, wear proper shoes, and carry water.

Can I continue over the Hatenashi Pass to Kumano Hongu?

Yes, but treat it as a full mountain day. From the trailhead to the Yakio bus stop on the Kumano River is about 10.4 km over the 1,114 m pass. Past the hamlet there is no point where you can break off and head back easily, and the Kannon-do hall below the pass is the only water source on the crossing.
