About This Destination

A shrine in the cedar forest on the shore of Lake Ashi, moved to this site in 757, with the red Peace Torii standing in the water below it. The shrine is free to visit, but the torii photo spot has a queue on most weekends.

From the Moto-Hakone side of Lake Ashi, a road lined with torii leads into the forest. The main approach is about 90 stone steps under old cedars, easier than it looks, and a stepless path through the woods runs alongside. Tradition says the priest Mangan moved the shrine here in 757. In the Kamakura period it ranked among the most important shrines for the shogunate's warriors, and Minamoto no Yoritomo worshipped here. The vermilion hall sits at the top, and immediately to its right is the Kuzuryu Shrine Shingu, dedicated to the nine-headed dragon of the lake; the original Kuzuryu shrine is about 30 minutes' walk away along the shore inside the paid Kuzuryu-no-Mori forest. Most visitors, though, head down to the water. The Peace Torii stands in the lake below the hall, erected in 1952 to mark the San Francisco Peace Treaty, and the queue for a photo standing under it forms early and can run long on weekends and holidays. Come before tour buses arrive or late in the afternoon. The treasure hall (500 yen) holds Important Cultural Properties, including an illustrated scroll of the shrine's origins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the wait to take a photo at the Peace Torii?

It depends on the day. Weekday mornings are short, while weekends, holidays and the middle of the day can mean a long line, since each group takes its turn under the torii. If you only want the torii in the frame, you can photograph it from the lakeside path without queuing.

Does it cost anything to visit Hakone Shrine?

No, the grounds and the Peace Torii are free. The treasure hall costs 500 yen for adults (junior high school age and up) and 300 yen for elementary school children.

Where is Kuzuryu Shrine?

The Shingu branch is right next to Hakone Shrine's main hall. The original Honmiya is on the lake shore inside the Kuzuryu-no-Mori forest, about 30 minutes' walk from Hakone-en, and entering the forest costs 600 yen. On the 13th of each month, a special boat runs for the monthly festival.
