About This Destination

The southernmost point of mainland Japan, at the tip of the Osumi Peninsula. From the car park an 800-meter trail through cycads and banyans passes Misaki Shrine and ends at an observation deck facing Sata Misaki Lighthouse, first lit in 1871. Free, open from 8:00 until sunset, and realistically reached only by car.

Getting here is half the point. Cape Sata is the bottom of the Osumi Peninsula and the southernmost point of the Japanese mainland, and no regular bus goes there; the last route stopped in 2006. Most people drive, often taking Ferry Nankyu across the bay from Yamakawa, near Ibusuki, to Nejime in about 50 minutes, then driving about 45 minutes south. The road ends at a car park with 40 spaces and a tourist information center (9:00 to 17:00) with material on the lighthouse. From there an 800-meter path runs through cycads, banyans and bougainvillea, rising and dipping as it goes, so wear proper shoes. On the way is Misaki Shrine, said to date from 708 and now visited by couples for its matchmaking charms. The observation deck, rebuilt in 2018, has the Pacific on one side and the East China Sea on the other, and on clear days Tanegashima, Yakushima and Mount Kaimon. Just offshore, Sata Misaki Lighthouse stands on the islet of Owajima: designed by Richard Henry Brunton and first lit in 1871, destroyed in a 1945 air raid and rebuilt in 1950. The park opens at 8:00 and closes at sunset. Watch for monkeys and wild boar on the road in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the opening hours and is there a fee?

Entry and parking are free. The park is open every day from 8:00 until sunset, and you cannot go in after dark. The tourist information center is open 9:00 to 17:00.

Can I get there by public transport?

Not realistically. Regular buses to the cape ended in 2006 and the sightseeing bus tour is suspended. You can take Ferry Nankyu from Yamakawa to Nejime, but from Nejime you still need a car or taxi for the last 45 minutes.

How long is the walk to the observation deck?

The path from the car park is 800 meters each way, through subtropical forest with some ups and downs, and passes Misaki Shrine on the way. Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Can I get a certificate for reaching the southernmost point?

Yes. Minamiosumi town gives visitors a free certificate for mainland Japan's southernmost point, part of a set covering the four extreme points of the mainland. If you missed it on the day, you can apply through a form on the town's tourism site.
