About This Destination

The highest original castle in Japan at 430 meters elevation, a mountaintop fortress often shrouded in clouds.
Bitchu-Matsuyama Castle holds the distinction of being the highest original castle in Japan, with its keep standing at an elevation of 430 meters atop Mount Gagyu. It is the only surviving mountain castle (yamajiro) with an original tower in the country. The challenging uphill walk from the shuttle bus drop-off takes about 20 minutes through dramatic stone walls built into the mountainside. The compact two-story tower is modest in size but impressive in its setting, surrounded by reconstructed turrets and walls. From autumn through early spring, the castle can be viewed from afar floating above a sea of clouds, earning it the nickname 'Castle in the Sky'. The castle's resident cat, Sanjuro, has become an internet celebrity. Open 9:00 to 17:30 (shorter hours in winter).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I actually reach the castle?

From JR Okayama Station, take the JR Hakubi Line to Bitchu-Takahashi Station — about 35–55 minutes (¥970 local; faster Yakumo limited express ¥2,490). At the station, take a 10-minute taxi (~¥1,500) or the seasonal Joran shuttle bus (¥800 round-trip) to Fuigo-toge trailhead. From there, walk uphill 20 minutes through stone walls. Total from Okayama: 1.5–2 hours one-way. Wear sturdy shoes.

When can I see the famous 'castle in the sky' cloud sea?

Late September to early April; peak conditions are October–November mornings just before sunrise. The cloud sea forms after a clear, cool night with high humidity and a temperature drop at dawn. View it from the Unkai Tenboudai (Cloud Sea Viewing Platform), 20 minutes' drive from Bitchu-Takahashi Station — taxis run a pre-dawn package (¥4,500 round-trip from station). Be there by 6:30; clouds usually disperse by 9:00.

What's the entry fee and is it worth the climb?

Adult entry to the keep is ¥500; open 9:00–17:30 (April–September) or 9:00–16:30 (October–March). The 20-minute climb earns the experience: only 12 original castle keeps survive in Japan and Bitchu-Matsuyama is the only mountain-top one. The interior is tiny but the stone-wall sections on the climb are world-class. Sanjuro the castle cat (born 2018) usually appears between 10:00–14:00.

Can I combine this with other Okayama sights in one day?

Yes, but plan carefully. Bitchu-Matsuyama Castle alone needs 4–5 hours from Okayama. Pair it with the picturesque Fukiya Furusatomura village (3 buses south, 30 min) or the Bitchu Kokubunji five-story pagoda en route. Morning castle visit + afternoon Kurashiki (1 hr by Yakumo) is a popular combo. Skip combining with Korakuen the same day — too rushed.
