About This Destination

A single inn deep in the Aoni valley east of Kuroishi, lit at night by oil lamps instead of electric light, with four baths and no mobile signal. From December to March private cars are banned on the access road and the inn's booked shuttle is the only way in.

Aoni Onsen is one inn, Lamp no Yado Aoni Onsen, at the bottom of the Aoni valley in the mountains east of Kuroishi. The poet Niwa Yogaku opened it in 1929, and it still runs on lamplight. The inn says power came in only about 25 years ago, to run the emergency lights, and that even now only part of the kitchen, the fridges and the toilet seats are electric. Rooms have no electric light, no TV and no air conditioning, and mobile phones get no signal. Staff look after nearly 200 lamps every day in a lamp shed and carry them out on poles toward evening. Dinner is in the big hall by lamplight; give your eyes a few minutes. There are four baths, all clear simple-spring water flowing straight from the source: Kenroku-no-Yu, built of hiba wood and open 24 hours for overnight guests; the indoor bath in the main building; Takimi-no-Yu, which looks out on a waterfall; and a mixed rock-built outdoor bath by the river with women-only hours. There is no shampoo or hair dryer. Getting here is the trade-off. From April to November it is a bus plus the inn's shuttle, or about 30 minutes by car from the Kuroishi interchange. From December to March the road from Route 102 down to the inn is closed to private cars, and the shuttle is the only way in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Aoni Onsen just for a bath?

Yes. Day bathing runs from 10:00 to 15:00 and costs 1,000 yen (raised from 600 yen on April 1, 2026). From December to March you can only arrive on the inn's booked shuttle, so your time there follows the shuttle times. In the inn's winter timetable (December 1 to March 31), as its access page showed it in October 2026, the 9:15 from Kuroishi Station arrives at 9:55, and the 13:30 back reaches Kuroishi Station at 14:20.

Is the outdoor bath mixed, and are there women-only hours?

The rock outdoor bath by the river is mixed, with set women-only hours; the inn's own pages give different times, so ask at the front desk. The other three baths are separated by gender, and the women's side of Kenroku-no-Yu has its own outdoor bath. The inn does not publish a rule on bath wraps or towels in the bath, so ask before you go in.

Can I drive to Aoni Onsen in winter?

Not all the way. From December 1 to March 31 the road from Route 102 down to the inn is closed to private cars. Park at Michi-no-Eki Niji-no-ko and take the inn's shuttle, booked by phone. In 2026 the road reopened on April 1, but only to 4WD cars or cars on winter tyres until around mid-April.
